Type Locality and Naming

Gorin zone of westernmost Sikhote-Alin.


Lithology and Thickness

"Lithologically, it is quite variable across its area and section. However, a remarkable basal layer of different-sized pebble conglomerates, gravelstones, coarse sandstones, siltstones with pebbly inclusions could be seen everywhere the formation occurs ... The total thickness of the formation is up to 1400 m". Coeval with siltstones, mudstones, siliceous and siliceous-clay rocks, spillites.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformity above a hiatus onto Komsomolsk Gr, or even the Jurassic Khabarovsk Fm.

Upper contact

Disconformably overlain by Machtovaya Fm (Machtovaya unit)

Regional extent

The Gornaya Protoka Formation is widely distributed in the northern part of the Gorin zone, while in the south it is distributed fragmentarily.

Fossils

The formation yields an assemblage of fauna including bivalves Inoceramus anglicus, Propeamussium (Parvamussium) aff. kimurai, Pleuromya Borealis, Inoceramus ex gr. yabei, I. aff. amakusensis, I. cf. concentricus, I. cf. interruptus, Aucellina ucturiensis, A. cf. aptiensis, A. ex gr. caucasica, A. cf. carinata, A. aff. rhomboidea and ammonites Spitidiscus aff. rotula (Barremian), Pseudotetragonites cf. kudrjavcevi, Cleoniceras sp. typical for the Barremian?/Aptian-middle Albian of Sikhote-Alin.
